Damping stress with Walnuts

For those of you who often experience stress when working in an office, snack nuts may be selected.

Walnuts have previously known properties help lower blood cholesterol levels. But not only that, walnuts can also help overcome stress and lowers blood pressure.

The latest research, published the Journal of the American College of Nutrition showed that those levels of bad cholesterol ((LDL / low density lipoprotein) has high blood pressure (tension) is lower in a state of stress. It happened because the walnut diet for three weeks.

In his research, the research team asked participants to give a speech for three minutes or dipping a foot in cold water. Both types of activity was intended to trigger stress. After being monitored, those who consumed nuts was lower blood pressure.

"This is the first study to show that walnuts reduce blood pressure during stress. The person who showed a biological response to excessive stress at higher risk of heart disease," said Professor Sheila West, researchers from Penn State University.

West and his team implement the three diets to the respondents. The first group was fed a diet without nuts, both with walnuts and walnut oil, while a third with walnuts and flaxseed oil.

Researchers said, adding flax seed oil does not affect blood pressure, but it helped create an anti-inflammatory effects in blood vessels. This could reduce the risk of heart disease.

After undergoing any type of diet, all 22 respondents was asked to speak and do a cold water test. The average diastolic pressure, number representing the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting (relaxed) after contraction, decreased significantly in those whose diets contain walnuts and walnut oil.

"These results are consistent with several previous studies showing that walnuts can reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. This study shows that blood pressure is also reduced when a person experiences stress in their daily lives," added West.

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in walnuts, is known to help erode the bad cholesterol and lowers the risk of heart disease.
